Man's Will Over God's Will, and God still wins!
Isaac: Over 100 years old
Jacob, Esau: 40s
(Genesis 27:1)
And it came to pass, that when Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esau his eldest son, and said unto him, My son: and he said unto him, Behold, here am I.
- Isaac is over 100 years old at this time (sixty when they were
born and they are 40 plus)
- Esau lives elsewhere with his two wives,
- The vision was a Divine Providence?
- Even though he sold his birthright, he was in fact still the oldest son
(Genesis 26:33)
And he called it Shebah: therefore the name of the city is Beersheba unto this day.
(Genesis 27:2)
And he said, Behold now, I am old, I know not the day of my death:
- We cannot count on tomorrow, let alone any future date, that we will be on the earth
- The same is for all mankind, not just unbelievers
(Luke 12:16-21)
And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
(Genesis 27:3)
Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison;
- Good old venison, deer meat. Esau the bow hunter.
- Would have been a recurve or a long bow, with a stone tip. The quiver is to carry the arrows safely
through the hunt
- Think about this. They HAD plenty flocks and herds to eat.
- Isaac liked Esau's deer meat. Not to mention he loved Esau
(Genesis 25:28)
And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.
(Genesis 27:4)
And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die.
- The love for Esau was about to become the future blessing for Esau
- God sees the heart of Esau; Isaac sees the venison
- God has His plans; Isaac has his and they are different
- Why eat before pronouncing a blessing? It was customary to have a solemn feast before this blessing
was given
- Was there that much game available that Isaac was guaranteed to be fed?
- Isaac knew the promise of God up to now: Nations, Land, people, the Messiah
- This is a classic example of emotions, carnality, the flesh, earthly love and affection over God's
will
- Perhaps this is why God allowed Jacob and Rebekah to be so clever and cunning
- The elder shall serve the younger is the next generation after "In Isaac shall thy seed be called"
- The" blessing was reserved for one.
- Esau had already sold his birthright by now
MEAT FOR THE BELLY
(Romans 16:18)
For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.
(1 Corinthians 6:13)
Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.
(Philippians 3:19)
Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)
OUTWARD APPEARANCE: MAN'S EYES
(Genesis 25:23)
And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.
(1 Samuel 16:6-7)
And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD'S anointed is before him. But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
(Genesis 27:5)
And Rebekah heard when Isaac spake to Esau his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt for venison, and to bring it.
- Isaac apparently never told Rebekah what he was planning to do; she overheard it
- This could be from shame, Isaac knowing it was wrong
- Esau despised his birthright, but would accept a blessing. Why is this?
- Birthrights have responsibilities; blessings have less (from Esau's perspective)
- Perhaps Esau thought that this would be a physical blessing of an inheritance?
- Consider the time it takes to stalk a deer with a bow.........five minutes to five days....
(Genesis 27:6-7)
And Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son, saying, Behold, I heard thy father speak unto Esau thy brother, saying, Bring me venison, and make me savoury meat, that I may eat, and bless thee before the LORD before my death.
- This clearly shows one reason he may not have told her-her disapproval and desire to thwart those
plans
- Knowing he could not see well, is it coincidence that Rebekah overheard the conversation?
- She does not want Esau to get this blessing
- Esau hunted and apparently also cooked his quarry for his father, exactly the way his father loved
it
(Genesis 25:28)
And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.
(Genesis 27:8-9)
Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to that which I command thee. Go now to the flock, and fetch me from thence two good kids of the goats; and I will make them savoury meat for thy father, such as he loveth:
- Enter deception #1
- Rebekah is genetically the source of the deception in Jacob
- How else do you make goat taste like venison?
- A kid would be tender like venison, but not an adult goat
- Jacob is forty years old plus. He can say no here
(Genesis 27:10)
And thou shalt bring it to thy father, that he may eat, and that he may bless thee before his death.
- This is risky from a people perspective since, if this were to fail, there would go the blessing....
- ....but not really. God promised, and they believed it, but somehow thought they had to intervene to
prevent this blessing from going to Esau
- Esau would get the blessing and Jacob might be completely shut out of a blessing
- Jacob was not going to be feeding a starving Esau in exchange for his blessing, like he did with the
birthright.
- Jacob is forty years old plus. He can say no here
QUESTION: Could not God have prevented Esau from getting a deer altogether? Could God have not sent an angel to prevent this blessing going to Esau? Or in some other way, perhaps rendering Isaac speechless for that blessing until he repented?
(Genesis 27:11)
And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man:
- Enter Deception #2
- As much as you can make goat taste like venison through cooking skills, you cannot grow hair on your hands!
(Genesis 27:12)
My father peradventure will feel me, and I shall seem to him as a deceiver; and I shall bring a curse upon me, and not a blessing.
- Again, an impossibility. What God will bless cannot be cursed
- Apparently Jacob knew that Isaac would verify who it was with the food, the sound of the voice, the
scent and the skin. Isaac's eyesight, being a blind man or nearly so, was not an issue at all.
- Apparently also Jacob was an unwilling participant (partner in crime) in all of this at the first
- What God is to bless cannot be cursed, so ultimately they are lacking faith and treading into deep,
troublesome waters here
Numbers 22:9-35
And God came unto Balaam, and said, What men are these with thee? And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me, saying,
Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth: come now, curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out. And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they are blessed.
And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land: for the LORD refuseth to give me leave to go with you. And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, Balaam refuseth to come with us.
And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honourable than they. And they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus saith Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me: For I will promote thee unto very great honour, and I will do whatsoever thou sayest unto me: come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people. And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more. Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what the LORD will say unto me more.
And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men come to call thee, rise up, and go with them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do.
And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab. And God's anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the LORD stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.
And the ass saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.
But the angel of the LORD stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side. And when the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall: and he smote her again.
And the angel of the LORD went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left. And when the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she fell down under Balaam: and Balaam's anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a staff. And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?
And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee. And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? And he said, Nay. Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face. And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thyway is perverse before me:
And the ass saw me, and turned from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive. And Balaam said unto the angel of the LORD, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back again. And the angel of the LORD said unto Balaam, Go with the men: but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.
(Genesis 27:13)
And his mother said unto him, Upon me be thy curse, my son: only obey my voice, and go fetch me them.
- For listening to anyone who is steering you wrong, there are consequences for you, and for them-curse
or not.
- Maybe Rebekah thought she could take the rap for Jacob if they were caught
- Jacob is forty years old plus. He can say no here
(Genesis 27:14)
And he went, and fetched, and brought them to his mother: and his mother made savoury meat, such as his father loved.
- Jacob has now given in to his mothers wishes, for better or for worse
(Genesis 27:15)
And Rebekah took goodly raiment of her eldest son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them upon Jacob her younger son:
- This would supply the smell and feel of Esau
- Jacob is forty years old plus. He can say no here
(Genesis 27:16)
And she put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands, and upon the smooth of his neck:
- There is involved in this scheme: Cooking slaughtered food, gathering and dressing up in someone
else's clothing, and dressing animal skins to wear as well.
- This is basically a lot of work, giving either of them time to repent, but they do not
- Jacob is forty years old plus. He can say no here
(Genesis 27:17)
And she gave the savoury meat and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.
- What is going through their minds at this nervous point?
- Do they think they are actually in God's will, while being deceptive?
- Jacob is forty years old plus. He can say no here
- Now we have the sense of hearing (he changed his voice), taste ("venison"), touch (clothing, animal
skin), smell, Esau's clothing....just no sense of sight
- This is four of the five senses appealed to in the flesh
(Genesis 27:18)
And he came unto his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I; who art thou, my son?
- At this point there is now no going back, unless they want to confess.
- Apparently they do not, so step one is the voice....Isaac suspects it is different
(Genesis 27:19)
And Jacob said unto his father, I am Esau thy firstborn; I have done according as thou badest me: arise, I pray thee, sit and eat of my venison, that thy soul may bless me.
THE LIE
- I am Esau: LIE #1 (He was Jacob)
- I did according to what you asked me: LIE #2 (Isaac asked Esau, not Jacob)
- Eat my: LIE #3 (He did not cook it the way Isaac liked it, Rebekah did)
- Venison: LIE#4 (It was goat, not venison)
- You will bless me, Esau, after you eat: LIE #5 (Isaac will bless Jacob; Esau was still hunting)
- Jacob is forty years old plus. Too late say no here
(Genesis 27:20)
And Isaac said unto his son, How is it that thou hast found it so quickly, my son? And he said, Because the LORD thy God brought it to me.
- Isaac is amazed at he "hunting prowess of Esau" here and apparently suspects something
- Because the LORD brought it to me: LIE #6
- God would not be part of the deception
(Genesis 27:21)
And Isaac said unto Jacob, Come near, I pray thee, that I may feel thee, my son, whether thou be my very son Esau or not.
- Perhaps he is a bit more suspecting than as at the first
- It would be the voice being different that would cause this
- Very: Interesting choice of words
VER'Y, a. [L. verus.] True; real.
VER'Y, a. [L. verus.] True; real.
Whether thou be my very son Esau or not. Genesis 27:21.
He that repeateth a matter, separateth very friends. Proverbs 17.
VER'Y, adv. As an adverb, or modifier of adjectives and adverbs, very denotes in a great degree, an eminent or high degree, but not generally the highest; as a very great mountain; a very bright sun; a very cold day; a very pernicious war; a very benevolent disposition; the river flows very rapidly.
(Genesis 27:22)
And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father; and he felt him, and said, The voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.
- Isaac has to have known something was up, but apparently he was deceived by Jacob the
deceiver
- How do you not know that this is not Esau's voice, but Jacob? Was he a mime?
- When a person wants to be deceived, they will accept as truth anything, and be gullible
- How hairy WAS Esau anyways?
(Genesis 27:23)
And he discerned him not, because his hands were hairy, as his brother Esau's hands: so he blessed him.
- God allows us to be deceived if we step out of His Divine Will,
which is what Isaac, Rebekah, Esau and Jacob all did
- Isaac for blessing Esau instead of the younger, who the elder
will serve (Gen 25:23)
- Esau for accepting that which was not his to accept
- Rebekah for initiating this entire scheme
- Jacob for going along with it all
(Genesis 27:24)
And he said, Art thou my very son Esau? And he said, I am.
- "I AM"......interesting choice of words again. The exact name of God used to deceive, replace in an action designed to thwart God's will
- That makes this LIE#7
(Genesis 27:25)
And he said, Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son's venison, that my soul may bless thee. And he brought it near to him, and he did eat: and he brought him wine, and he drank.
- It is not the right son
- It is not venison
- The blessing is not going to Esau, but to Jacob
- Perhaps the wine is to seal the deal as an enticement
(Genesis 27:26-27)
And his father Isaac said unto him, Come near now, and kiss me, my son. And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed:
- Seeing with spiritual eyes is the most important thing, discerning
- Isaac has the senses of taste, hearing, smell and touch....and not eyesight
- That ONE sense would have worked to prevent the deception, most likely
- Did Rebekah use flowers to make him smell sweet?
- Did Esau smell like this all of the time? With all of that hair even?
(Genesis 27:28-29)
Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine: Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother's sons bow down to thee: cursed beevery one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee.
- This has been true throughout history, whenever Israel followed God, and now today again that they are in the land
- Perhaps in his zeal to bless Esau, he lost "sight" of the will of God
- Blindness is not only physical, but spiritual
- Spiritual blindness is much worse than physical blindness
- Perhaps God let Isaac go blind to allow him to walk by faith and not by sight-but that was physical blindness
- God does not want us to be spiritually blind-ever
Physical blindness
(John 9:1-3)
And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
Spiritual Blindness
(Matthew 23:16-17, 19)
Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? Ye fools and blind: for whether isgreater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
(Genesis 27:30)
And it came to pass, as soon as Isaac had made an end of blessing Jacob, and Jacob was yet scarce gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting.
- Sometimes a house of cards tumbles rather quickly, once the deception is completed
- Esau could have caught that deer right before by ten minutes, or days later
- God times this in His Providence, to let everyone know the ruse is up
- This is too important to let go on as a set of seven lies for too long
(Genesis 27:31)
And he also had made savoury meat, and brought it unto his father, and said unto his father, Let my father arise, and eat of his son's venison, that thy soul may bless me.
- Food for a full belly.......now wasted food
- Esau, who hated his birthright, does not lie
- It is his venison
- He did prepare it the way his father liked it
(Genesis 27:32)
And Isaac his father said unto him, Who art thou? And he said, I am thy son, thy firstborn Esau.
- At this point there are two confused people
- Esau knows his father is not deaf, but just blind
- Therefore, he wonders why he is asking
- Isaac is wondering why the scenario is so immediately being repeated
- Did he perhaps think Esau came back for another blessing? It would be twice in a row
- Twins often think and speak alike
EARLIER (JACOB)
(Genesis 27:19)
And Jacob said unto his father, I am Esau thy firstborn; I have done according as thou badest me: arise, I pray thee, sit and eat of my venison, that thy soul may bless me.
NOW (ESAU)
(Genesis 27:31)
And he also had made savoury meat, and brought it unto his father, and said unto his father, Let my father arise, and eat of his son's venison, that thy soul may bless me.
(Genesis 27:32-33)
And Isaac his father said unto him, Who art thou? And he said, I am thy son, thy firstborn Esau. And Isaac trembled very exceedingly, and said, Who? where is he that hath taken venison, and brought it me, and I have eaten of all before thou camest, and have blessed him? yea, and he shall be blessed.
- Is Isaac now awakening to the fact that he was duped?
- This "Who?" is louder than an hoot owl
- The "where is he" is like saying, "I want to wring his little neck!"
- The irrevocable blessing is done and gone to the correct party in the wrong way
- God allows us to be blessed as sinners in our sin
- God can bless us in His Will, in His Time, in His Way , and despite man's or the enemy's resistance, assistance, deception, scheming, plotting, sinfulness or anything else
(Genesis 27:34)
And when Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry, and said unto his father, Bless me, even me also, O my father.
- The "one morsel of meat" deal does not look so nice to Esau right now.
- This blessing is for Israel until today, so this is no light thing at all
- Again something so huge as a blessing would have been accomplished without Jacob or Rebekah's
help anyways
- Those who reject Christ in this life will also, in the next one, scream that they want into Heaven, but
will be told, "I never knew
you"
MATTHEW HENRY:
" Those that will not so much as ask and seek now will knock shortly, and cry, Lord, Lord"
(Matthew 7:21)
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
(Matthew 25:1-13)
Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.
But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.
Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.
(Hebrews 12:16-17)
Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
(Genesis 27:35)
And he said, Thy brother came with subtilty, and hath taken away thy blessing.
- "With subtilty" is exactly right, precise, accurate, complete.
- Esau was "the cunning hunter", yet it was Jacob who with subtilty deceived dear old Dad.
(Genesis 25:27)
And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.
(Genesis 27:36)
And he said, Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he said, Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me?
- Isaac was pre-named before he was born
- Jacob was called this presumably by his father, perhaps by the heel grabbing on the way out of the
womb
- Jacob never took away his birthright.....Esau sold it to him for pottage, "fair and square"
(Hosea 12:2-3)
The LORD hath also a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he recompense him. He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God:
(Genesis 25:26)
And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau's heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.
MATTHEW HENRY:
2. There was a manifest contest in their births. Esau, the stronger, came forth first; but Jacob's hand took hold of his heel, v. 26. This signified, (1.) Jacob's pursuit of the birthright and blessing; from the first, he reached forth to catch hold of it, and, if possible, to prevent his brother. (2.) His prevailing for it at last, that, in process of time, he should undermine his brother, and gain his point. This passage is referred to (Hos. xii. 8), and hence he had his name, Jacob, a supplanter.
(Genesis 27:37)
And Isaac answered and said unto Esau, Behold, I have made him thy lord, and all his brethren have I given to him for servants; and with corn and wine have I sustained him: and what shall I do now unto thee, my son?
- The blessing was he promise from God for the nation of Israel, not a blessing strictly from Jacob
- Not that God would have allowed it, but Isaac meant to give this to Esau!
(Genesis 27:38)
And Esau said unto his father, Hast thou but one blessing, my father? bless me, even me also, O my father. And Esau lifted up his voice, and wept.
- Esau's personality is such that he probably wants money and lots of it
- It is shown by him so far that he does not want the birthright, so the spiritual blessings of a nation of God's people is not what he is looking for
(Genesis 27:39)
And Isaac his father answered and said unto him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above;
- Esau gets all thing fleshy and earthly, and nothing spiritual like Jacob
- Esau gets everything temporal, everything worldly; nothing eternal
(Numbers 13:20)
And what the land is, whether it be fat or lean, whether there be wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the firstripe grapes.
(Daniel 4:15)
Nevertheless leave the stump of his roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth:
(Daniel 4:23)
And whereas the king saw a watcher and an holy one coming down from heaven, and saying, Hew the tree down, and destroy it; yet leave the stump of the roots thereof in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him;
(Daniel 4:25)
That they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and they shall wet thee with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over thee, till thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.
(Daniel 4:33)
The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles' feathers, and his nails like birds' claws.
(Daniel 5:21)
And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will.
(Genesis 27:40)
And by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck.
- Israel is in charge-always when God puts her in the land and they walk with her and, ultimately, in the
end
- Israel cannot be destroyed; her neighbors can and will be
- The nation around Israel will always be at war with her and among themselves, plus with the
Gentiles, as today
- There will be times when Israel was in bondage to them as well, throughout history
(Hebrews 11:20)
By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.
(Genesis 27:41)
And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob.
- He hated Esau because Isaac blessed him and God loved him
- We get that from unbelievers today, as does Israel
- Esau: Esau have I loved and Jacob have I hated
- God: Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.
(Malachi 1:2-3)
I have loved you, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob's brother? saith the LORD: yet I loved Jacob, And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness.
(Romans 9:13)
As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.
(Genesis 27:42)
And these words of Esau her elder son were told to Rebekah: and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said unto him, Behold, thy brother Esau, as touching thee, doth comfort himself, purposing to kill thee.
- Apparently a servant was a spy, since Rebekah and Jacob are presumably in hiding!
- To comfort oneself by killing another is pretty pathetic to say the least
(Genesis 27:43)
Now therefore, my son, obey my voice; and arise, flee thou to Laban my brother to Haran;
- This may be the only time of late Jacob would do well to obey his mother!
- However, Laban is not a good person to wind up with
- God's plan, nevertheless, for Jacob's wife is about to unfold in God's timing and Sovereignty
(Genesis 27:44-45)
And tarry with him a few days, until thy brother's fury turn away; Until thy brother's anger turn away from thee, and he forget thatwhich thou hast done to him: then I will send, and fetch thee from thence: why should I be deprived also of you both in one day?
- Apparently she does not know Esau, or we do not
- A few days? As much as Esau did not care about his birthright and blessings, his hatred of Jacob was
strong as ever.
- This is apparently about Rebekah as well, since she does not want to lose two sons
(Genesis 27:46)
And Rebekah said to Isaac, I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth: if Jacob take a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these which are of the daughters of the land, what good shall my life do me?
- The Sovereignty of God is the lesson here.
- Jacob tried to go against God's will
- No matter how God decides to thwart the plans of man, they are thwarted nonetheless
- He could have prevented it by making Esau never get another deer the rest of his life
- He could have thwarted it by speaking directly to Isaac , Jacob or Esau
