The Fear of God: WHAT Is It?
(Romans 11:19-21)
Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in. Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear: For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.
- Law of first use, actual fear (being afraid) of mankind by animals after Noah's Flood (Genesis 9:2)
- God told Abraham not to fear (be afraid) (Genesis 15:1)
- Lot feared to dwell in Zoar (was afraid) (Genesis 19:30)
- Abraham told Abimelech that there was no fear of God, and thought that Abimelech would have his men kill Abraham and take his wife Sarah because of it
- God told Hagar not to fear that harm would come to Ishmael once Abraham kicked them out

- The fear of God came upon Israel after Saul sent them pieces of oxen to their coastal towns (1 Samuel )
- Samuel told Israel that if they feared the LORD, they would follow him, along with their new king Saul (1 Samuel 12:14, 20, 24)
- So Israel did fear God when he then thundered and rained on them (1 Samuel 12:18)
- The people of Israel feared breaking the oath Saul made not to eat before sundown (1 Samuel 14:26)
- Saul sinned by fearing the people of Israel and not waiting for Samuel to sacrifice at Gilgal (1 Samuel 15:24)
- David feared Saul and so left when it was revealed to him by Jonathan that Saul sought to kill him (1 Samuel 21:10)
- David told Abiathar not to fear Saul as God would be with them (1 Samuel 22:23)
- Jonathan told David not to fear Saul, as God would make David king despite Saul (1 Samuel 23:17)
- Then David hasted away for fear of Saul in the mountains of Maon (1 Samuel 23:26)
- Ishbosheth was afraid of Abner in Abner's arrogance after Ishbosheth rebuked Abner about sleeping with David Abner's father's concubines (2 Samuel 3:11)
- Mephibosheth was afraid to face David for fear of his life, but David told him to fear not (2 Samuel 9:7)

It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.
